Unwind After the Conference: Explore Nature, Science, and the Stars

After a full day of inspiring talks and discussions, it’s time to relax and experience some of the unique places South Estonia has to offer. We invite all conference participants to join us for three guided excursions— each offering a different way to recharge, connect, and discover something new.

Take a walk through a peaceful bog, gaze into the depths of the universe, or step back in time to explore the roots of astronomical science — the choice is yours.

Meeting Point: Vanemuise Lower Parking Lot (Google Maps link)

Step into the stillness of Meenikunno Bog, where autumn paints the landscape in gold. On this guided hike, you’ll wander along quiet trails, breathing in the crisp air and soaking in the beauty of one of Estonia’s most enchanting natural treasures.

The journey begins in Tartu, with a bus ride to the bog. The hike itself will last around 2 hours (4–5 km), depending on the pace of the group. For those who wish, there will also be a chance to try bog shoes — a playful way to step off the trail and feel the softness of the peatland beneath your feet.

Afterwards, the forest becomes our dining hall. A campfire crackles, and a wilderness chef prepares a meal inspired by the season:

  • Grilled duck breast with orange sauce
  • Wok-fried vegetables with feta tabbouleh
  • Cranberry mousse with wild berries
  • Coffee & flavored water

Practical note: the trail may be wet or muddy — waterproof shoes or rubber boots are essential. Dress warmly and in layers, with gloves and a hat for comfort.

Participation fee: 70€. Payment on site (cash/card) or here. Places are limited — reserve early for this unforgettable evening among moss, mist, and firelight.

Come enjoy the crisp air, scenic views, and the unique atmosphere of the bog in the golden hours of the evening. For a taste of what to expect, you can read the BBC’s recent feature on Estonia’s bogs – Bog walking: exploring Estonia’s otherworldly wild landscapes.

Meeting point: In front of UT Library

Join us for a fascinating tour around two Observatories. The first stop is a visit to Old Observatory on Toome Hill in Tartu. The Old Observatory is the historical starting point of astronomy in Estonia and now serves as a museum. After the guided tour in Old Observatory we will head to the Estonian Space Centre, Estonia’s leading center for astronomy and space science, located in the picturesque village of Tõravere.

During the guided tour, you’ll get an exclusive look into the observatory’s rich history, scientific research, and powerful telescopes.

After the excursion in Tõravere, we will enjoy light snacks from local food and a relaxed atmosphere — a perfect chance to reflect on the experience and ask any questions you may have.

Participation fee: 40€. Payment on site (cash/card) or here.

Everyone is welcome — just bring your curiosity!

We will begin our excursion from Town Hall Square at 2.20 PM, walking together to the museum (approximately 3 km, about 30–40 minutes), or you may choose to meet the group in front of the museum at 3 PM.

Meeting point: Town Square

Begin your day with movement and fresh autumn air. The run starts from Town Hall Square, the heart of Tartu, where we set off together toward Toome Hill. Winding past historic university buildings and leafy park paths, we’ll climb gently to the hilltop before descending toward the Emajõgi River, following its calm banks as the city slowly wakes.

Led by local running enthusiast, the pace will be easy (around 6:30 min/km) and welcoming for all levels. It’s less about speed and more about enjoying the beauty of Tartu at dawn.

Free of charge — simply bring comfortable shoes and join us for this energizing start to the day.

Thursday, October 16, 2025 7-10 PM
Meeting point: Lodjakoda (Google Maps link)

Join us for an unforgettable evening at Lodjakoda, Tartu’s riverside workshop where traditional wooden barges are built by hand. The setting is rustic yet full of character — wooden beams, the scent of fresh timber, and the quiet flow of the river just outside create an atmosphere unlike any other.

The dishes are crafted from local ingredients, accompanied by drinks and lively conversation. To make the evening even more memorable, the Observatory Band — a group of scientists who moonlight as musicians — will fill the hall with cosmic music. And along the way, expect a few cultural surprises that showcase Estonia’s spirit and creativity.

This dinner is more than a meal: it is a celebration of community, discovery, and the joy of sharing stories together in a truly unique place.

Participation fee: 50 €. Payment is possible here.

Come for the food and music, stay for the atmosphere and memories.
